Drones operated by Ukraine's Security Service struck the Gorky oil pumping station in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod Oblast overnight, setting at least one storage tank ablaze and sending thick black smoke over surrounding villages. A parallel wave of drone attacks hit a petrochemical plant in Samara Oblast, where local media reported one person killed and at least two injured.
The Gorky station, located in Meshikha village in the Kstovo district, is one of the largest nodes in the Transneft Upper Volga pipeline system, a core artery of Russia's oil export infrastructure. According to Ukrainska Pravda, Militarnyi, The New Voice of Ukraine and the Kyiv Independent, the strike was carried out by drones from the SBU's Special Operations Center "A" during the night of 22 to 23 April.
Residents in nearby settlements filmed tall columns of smoke rising from the facility. Russian emergency services deployed to contain the fire, but initial imagery suggested significant damage to at least one tank.
The operation extended to Samara Oblast, where a petrochemical plant was also hit. Local officials reported one fatality and at least two wounded, according to reporting compiled by the Kyiv Independent and Report.az. Samara is a recurring target in Ukraine's long-range campaign against Russian refining capacity, reflecting a deliberate strategy of pressuring Moscow's export economy.
The strikes land at a moment when Brent crude is already trading near 100 to 103 dollars per barrel on Iran-related risk. Adding direct damage to Russian pipeline and refining infrastructure injects an additional supply-risk premium into an already jittery market. Analysts have noted that sustained Ukrainian pressure on Transneft nodes could force logistical rerouting and capacity adjustments, tightening Russia's ability to monetise exports at a moment when Moscow needs every revenue dollar.
Kyiv has not publicly quantified the damage, consistent with its standard operational posture.
