Russia launched one of its largest aerial barrages of 2026 against Ukraine on April 16, firing 659 drones and 44 missiles in an hours-long assault that killed at least 16 people, including a 12-year-old in Kyiv. The attack hit Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia.
Kyiv reported 4 dead and more than 50 injured. Odesa was hit hardest with 9 dead and at least 11 injured. Three women died in the Dnipro region, where roughly 36 people were wounded, and 1 person died in Zaporizhzhia. Civilian housing was repeatedly struck.
Ukrainian air defenses shot down 636 drones and 31 missiles, an interception rate consistent with recent large barrages. The most successful intercepts were against the Shahed-type drones that made up the bulk of the swarm. Several missiles, however, evaded defenses and caused most of the deaths.
Russian officials called the strikes retaliation for Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries earlier in the week. Ukraine's allies condemned the assault as an attack on civilians, and Kyiv renewed appeals for additional air defense systems.
