Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute on Wednesday to the victims of the 22 April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, marking one year since the assault that killed 26 civilians, most of them tourists, in the Kashmir region. The Indian Army reaffirmed that Operation Sindoor, launched in response, "continues."
In his public statement, Modi said: "Remembering the innocent lives lost in the gruesome Pahalgam terror attack on this day last year. They will never be forgotten. As a nation, we stand united in grief and determination. India will never bow to terrorism in any form." The quote was carried by Business Standard, Deccan Herald and Outlook India.
The Indian Army issued a post on X that read: "For acts against India, the response is assured. Justice will be served. Always." Officials reiterated that Operation Sindoor, launched on 7 May 2025 and resulting in an 88-hour conflict with Pakistan, remains active, according to Kashmir Observer.
Security was tightened across Kashmir for the anniversary, and the European Union expressed solidarity with India on the occasion.
The anniversary falls amid continued sensitivity in India-Pakistan relations and ongoing counterterrorism operations targeting groups India has linked to the Pahalgam attack, including The Resistance Front and Lashkar-e-Taiba. The combination of the prime ministerial tribute and the army's statement underscored New Delhi's message that the response posture remains open-ended rather than a one-off retaliation.
For a public that remembers Pahalgam as a turning point in the country's security debate, the day served as both commemoration and warning that the operation launched in its aftermath is not closed.
