Microsoft has announced a $10 billion (approximately 1.6 trillion yen) investment in Japan from 2026 through 2029, built around three pillars: Technology, Trust, and Talent.
The commitments include expanding in-country AI infrastructure, collaborating with domestic partners to expand AI infrastructure options, deepening public-private cybersecurity partnerships with Japan's national institutions, and training more than one million engineers, developers, and workers across Japan's most strategically important industries by 2030.
Microsoft will develop AI infrastructure alongside Sakura Internet and telecom operator SoftBank, with the two Japanese entities supplying graphics processing units and other computing resources. Sakura Internet shares jumped 20% following the announcement.
The new commitment builds on the $2.9 billion investment Microsoft made in Japan in April 2024. The announcements were made during a visit to Tokyo by Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith.
The deal positions Microsoft as the dominant AI infrastructure provider in one of the world's largest technology markets. Japan has been identified as a key market with growing demand for AI capabilities across manufacturing, healthcare, and financial services sectors.
