At least 66 people were killed and 83 others injured when a Colombian Air Force C-130H Hercules transport plane crashed shortly after takeoff in southern Colombia. It is one of the deadliest aviation disasters in Latin America in recent years.
On March 23, the military transport aircraft went down at Caucaya Airport in Puerto Leguizamo, a remote municipality in the Amazonian province of Putumayo near the borders with Peru and Ecuador. The plane, carrying 125 personnel — mostly soldiers — crashed just 1.5 km from the runway.
The crash triggered the detonation of ammunition on board, setting the wreckage ablaze and complicating rescue operations.
The C-130H Hercules was an older model that first entered service in 1965 and was donated to Colombia by the U.S. Air Force in September 2020. Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that the cause has not been determined and there is no indication of an attack by criminal groups.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro declared a period of national mourning. The military has launched a full investigation into the crash, which occurred in a region known for the presence of armed groups.
